Avalanche course
Skilled course instructors and multiple course locations
Uteguiden arranges several avalanche courses throughout the winter. Our course instructors are trained through NORTIND, Norsk Fjellsportforum, SLAO, AAA (American Avalanche Association), or CAA, which gives you as a course participant security in terms of the quality of what we teach.
The courses are held in Stranda, Hemsedal, Åndalsnes, and Bjorli. See the various course types in the course calendar.
Two-day avalanche course
Learn to make safe decisions in the winter mountains
This course is for you who like to travel on steep terrain in winter and want to learn more about avalanches.
We focus on choosing a route, touring avalanche terrain, seeking out and interpreting information about avalanche danger, and we will train on buddy rescue with transmitter/receiver, probe, and shovel. There will also be a lot of training in assessing snow stability and how you can make your own avalanche risk assessments based on observations and available information.
This two-day avalanche course is a course for anyone who wants to learn avalanche knowledge for their own trips in the winter mountains. We train on route selection and assess the risk of avalanches both on the way up and down. The best thing is to sign up the whole group that usually goes on a trip together, then you will also get good learning that can be used after the course.
First evening digital
After ordering, you will be sent a webinar, where you can go through various learning points when it suits you. Afterwards you take a knowledge test. That way, you will arrive even better prepared for the course and avoid stressing about making it to the first evening.
We have also set up some dates for this course as “Women only”, check the course calendar below.
Three-day advanced course
For those who do a lot of ski touring or freeriding
The advanced avalanche course focuses on route selection and how one should travel in different types of terrain to learn to read the terrain well. This is a must to be able to make safe route choices – both on the way up and down.
This course is suitable for those who have taken a basic course previously and want to learn more about the complex topics of snow and avalanches. The course is for those who want to take a closer look at what the snow can tell you through overall assessments, stability tests, and snow profiles – but also get better at route selection and trip planning. It is a prerequisite that you are in good shape and experienced when skiing off-piste.
After the course, you will be able to dig snow profiles and be familiar with various stability tests and their advantages/disadvantages to be able to assess when the various tests should be used and make safe route selections in avalanche-prone terrain.
Avalanche day – one day course
An introduction to buddy rescue and avalanche knowledge
This is a one-day avalanche course for you who drive off-piste and want to learn more about avalanches – an introduction to avalanches!
We have Strandafjellet Ski Resort as our starting point, but also take laps to go on shorter trips from the facility. The goal of the day is for you as a skier to feel safer when you do off-piste skiing in ski resorts.
We focus on identifying avalanche terrain and safe skiing. In addition, we do some nice turns in Northern Europe’s powder mecca! We alternate between theory and practical exercises during the day. A perfect arrangement to start with before joining a two-day avalanche course.
