Fjord Ski – Sunnmøre Alps
Based out of the Sagafjord Hotel and the Patchell hut, this 4 days, ski touring trip, will bring you on some of the classic summits in the Sunnmøre alps. Four days isn’t quite enough for you? You can add days to this trip and customize it to your liking.
The Sunnmøre alps are famous for their alpine and jagged peaks combined with incredible fjord scenery. These mountains average at around 1,500 meters and, when the conditions are right, one can ski from the summits all the way down to the fjord. Add some positive vibes, classic peaks like Slogen, Skårasalen or Grøtdalstinden and all the ingredients for a perfect ski touring trip are there!
Hjørundfjorden is still a bit of a hidden gem and we should get a lot terrain to ourselves during this trip. A normal ski day will be around 1000 vertical meters and around 8 hours long.
All of our guides are certified ski guides in Scandinavia and some of us are UIAGM-guides. We work as avalanche professionals and Oscar, Uteguiden’s owner, is one of the few “Canadian Avalanche Association professional level 2” in Scandinavia.
We are proud to be the first company in Norway to offer avalanche backpacks to all our customers. If you ever get caught in an avalanche, an avalanche backpack is the only thing that decreases your chances of burial. We don’t want to take bigger risks because of these backpacks but we do want to offer all the safety-nets available on the market for the best, and safest, skiing experience possible.
Are you keen on trying out light ski touring-gear? Rent from one of our locations for your trip. We have ski touring-packages from Dynafit, with both wide and narrow skis that suits the prevailing snow conditions.
Day by day
You’ll meet your guide that evening at the Saga Fjord hotel for your pre-trip briefing, equipment check and to socialize over dinner.
Accommodation and dinner that night at the Sagafjord Hotel.
After a delicious breakfast, you’ll meet your guide for your morning briefing. The day will start with a short avalanche awareness workshop and some practical companion rescue training. Daily itinerary will vary based on weather, avalanches conditions and group skills but a good option to start the weekend may be the ultra-classic Skårasalen with a final descent down to the fjord and a ferry ride back to the hotel!
Accommodation and 2-courses dinner that night at the Saga Fjord Hotel
After the first day at Skårasalen, it will be time to choose from one of the many classic summits in the Sunnmøre alps. Maybe a trip up to Grøtdalstind for some cool skiing and picturesque views over Sæbø and the Bondalen?
Back to the Saga Fjord Hotel that afternoon to enjoy an outside Après-ski before dinner.
On day 3, we will have an early start from Saga Fjord and take a ferry to Lekneset to drive up into Urkedalen. Here we’ll leave the cars and get ready for the day’s big goal – Slogen. We will first follow the Langsæter valley up and past Maudekollen and Jenteskaret. From there, the real climb begins and, right below the summit, skis will need to be strapped to backpacks to “bootpack” to the top. The ski down from Slogen will bring us to Patchellhytta, where we will be spending the night in a mountain hut.
We will cook dinner at the hut and finish the evening celebrating our day by the fireplace surrounded by majestic mountains.
From Patchellhytta, we are surrounded by 1,500 m high peaks giving us many options to choose from. A cool finish to the week can be to climb Store Brekketind, a classic summit where you have to cross a glacier to get all the way up to the top.
Our last day is quite busy as we also have to ski back to our cars and drive back to the airport.

Travel to Sæbø
We recommend you travel to Sæbø by plane to either Ørsta/Volda or Ålesund/Vigra. From there, the easiest option is to rent a car. It is approximately a 25 min drive from Ørsta to Sæbø and a 2 hour drive from Ålesund.
