Ålesund Winter: Kayak & Sauna, Boat Trips, Ski Touring

Ålesund in winter: what to do, from winter kayaking with sauna to fishing trips and ski touring in the Sunnmøre Alps. Practical tips, seasons and prices.

Ålesund in winter is quiet, atmospheric and far more active than most visitors expect. Between November and April you can paddle a sea kayak between the islands and warm up in a sauna afterwards, head out on a guided fishing trip from November to March, walk the Art Nouveau streets and climb to the Aksla viewpoint, or travel inland to ski tour in the Sunnmøre Alps.

What Ålesund is like in winter

Ålesund sits on a string of islands facing the Atlantic, so winter here is shaped by the sea. In the city itself, conditions are usually mild for Norway's latitude, with rain, wind and changing skies more common than deep snow. Inland, the picture changes quickly: within reach of the city, the Sunnmøre Alps rise straight out of the fjords and hold snow through the season.

Daylight is short around December, with only a handful of hours of usable light, and it grows steadily from January onwards. By March and April the days are long and the light is soft, which is why many outdoor people consider late winter the sweet spot. Plan your active hours around the middle of the day, and treat the dark afternoons as time for cafés, the aquarium or a sauna.

Things to do in Ålesund in winter

1. Winter kayaking with a sauna

Paddling in winter is a completely different experience from a summer tour. The water is calm on many days, the harbour is quiet, and the low sun lights up the colourful Art Nouveau facades along the channels. On our Winter kayak and sauna tour in Ålesund, a guide takes you out on the water and you finish by warming up in a sauna.

  • Season: November to April
  • Duration: about 4 hours
  • Price: 1 249 NOK
  • Minimum age: 13 (under 18 need written consent from a parent or guardian)

No previous kayaking experience is needed to join a guided tour, but you should be comfortable being outdoors in cold, damp conditions. Guides make the final safety call on the day, and routes are adapted to wind and weather. If you want to build skills before or after your trip, see our kayak courses.

2. A winter fishing trip on the sea

If you prefer to stay dry, a guided fishing trip is one of the easiest ways to get out on the water in the colder months. Our fishing trip from Ålesund runs in a low-season version from November to March, departing at 10:30, which fits neatly into the winter daylight window.

  • Duration: about 4 hours
  • Price: 2 090 NOK (child 1 849 NOK)
  • Suits all ages, and no experience is needed

It is a good choice for families and mixed groups, since nobody needs to paddle or ski. Dress in warm layers; on our boat and RIB trips we provide thermal suits and safety gear, so you do not need a wetsuit.

3. Private RIB and boat charters

Our shared RIB safaris from Ålesund run in the warmer season, but groups can ask about private RIB charters, for example a fjord or sea safari from Ålesund or a transfer towards the Storfjord. Winter availability depends on weather and sea state, so contact us with your dates. You will find all our options on the boat and RIB page. RIB tours have a minimum height of 140 cm.

4. Ski touring in the Sunnmøre Alps

Ålesund is a practical starting point for ski touring. The Sunnmøre Alps are known for long descents that can end close to the fjord, and the region around Stranda is a centre for powder skiing and outdoor culture. The main ski touring season typically runs from late winter into spring, when days are longer and the snowpack is often more settled, but conditions always vary from year to year.

Ski touring in this terrain involves avalanche risk, so going with a certified local guide is the sensible choice if you do not know the area. Browse our ski touring trips, or if you want to travel independently later, start with an avalanche course. For lift-served skiing, see our Stranda page.

5. Walk the Art Nouveau town and climb Aksla

After a fire destroyed much of the town in 1904, Ålesund was rebuilt largely in the Art Nouveau style, and the centre is compact enough to explore on foot in a few hours. Winter means fewer crowds, so you can take your time with the towers, turrets and ornamented facades.

For the classic view over the islands, walk up the long stairway from the town park to the Aksla viewpoint. In winter the steps can be wet or icy, so wear shoes with good grip and consider light traction aids after a cold night.

6. Indoor options for dark afternoons

On stormy days, the Atlantic Sea Park aquarium just outside the centre and the city's museums and cafés make good back-up plans. Many visitors combine a morning on the water with an indoor afternoon.

How to plan a winter day in Ålesund

  • Use the daylight: book outdoor activities for late morning and midday, especially in December and January.
  • Dress in layers: a windproof and waterproof jacket, warm wool or fleece, hat and gloves. Boat and RIB trips include thermal suits; for kayaking, gear suited to the conditions is provided.
  • Keep plans flexible: coastal weather changes fast. Light rain rarely cancels a tour, but guides decide on safety. If we cancel, you get a full refund or can rebook.
  • Meeting points: most of our guided tours in Ålesund meet at Notenesgata 3, a 3–5 minute walk from the cruise pier. RIB tours meet at Dronning Sonjas plass, Brosundet. Your booking confirmation states the exact point.
  • Book directly: payment is via an online link, and booking directly with us gives you our standard cancellation terms.

Ja.
