The Romsdalseggen hike is a ridge walk of roughly 10 km between Vengedalen and Åndalsnes in Romsdalen, Western Norway. Expect about 1,000 metres of ascent, even more descent, and 7–10 hours on the trail. The season normally runs from late June to September. It demands good fitness and comfort on steep terrain, rewarding you with views of Romsdalshornet, the Troll Wall and Romsdalsfjorden. Hike on your own or join a guided tour from Åndalsnes.

Where is Romsdalseggen?
Romsdalseggen (the Romsdal Ridge) rises above the small town of Åndalsnes in the Romsdalen valley, in the county of Møre og Romsdal on Norway's west coast. Åndalsnes sits at the head of Romsdalsfjorden, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountains in the country, and is the natural base for the hike.
The route step by step
Vengedalen and the climb
The hike starts in Vengedalen, a side valley of Romsdalen. From here the trail climbs steadily and steeply towards the mountain. This first section is the toughest physically, so keep a steady, relaxed pace. It is a long day.
The ridge itself
Once you reach the ridge, the landscape opens up. To the east and south you see the peaks of Romsdalen, including the distinctive Romsdalshornet (often called Romsdalshorn), and across the valley lies the Troll Wall (Trollveggen). To the north you look down on Romsdalsfjorden and Åndalsnes far below. The ridge has some narrow, exposed sections where you need to use your hands. This is not climbing, but people with a fear of heights should be prepared.
The descent to Åndalsnes
For many hikers, the long descent is the most tiring part. The trail heads down towards Nesaksla, home of the Rampestreken viewpoint, and on to the town centre. The Romsdalen Gondola (Romsdalsgondolen) also runs from Nesaksla and can spare your knees on the final stretch down. Check opening hours in advance.
Difficulty: is the Romsdalseggen hike right for you?
Romsdalseggen is considered a demanding mountain hike. You should:
- be used to long day hikes in steep, rocky terrain
- be comfortable with some exposure and narrow passages
- have the stamina for 7–10 hours on the move
- have good knees, or bring trekking poles, for the long descent
If you are unsure, a guided tour can be a good option. The guide knows the route, assesses weather and conditions along the way and adapts the pace to the group.
Bus to the trailhead and logistics
Because the hike starts in Vengedalen and ends in Åndalsnes, you need transport to the start. In the summer season there is normally a dedicated morning bus from Åndalsnes to Vengedalen. Timetables and ticket sales can change from year to year, so check the latest information before you travel. It is a good idea to park in Åndalsnes, so your car is waiting when you come down.
Best time to hike Romsdalseggen
The main season is summer and early autumn. Early in the season, snow patches can linger on north-facing sections, making the hike considerably harder. July and August offer the longest days and usually snow-free trails. September can bring crisp air and autumn colours, but shorter days and faster weather changes. Outside the season, the hike should only be attempted by experienced hikers with the right equipment.
Safety and weather
- Check the forecast and stay off the ridge in fog, strong wind or thunderstorms.
- Follow the Norwegian Mountain Code: tell someone your route, and turn back in good time.
- Wet rock and slabs become slippery. Take it slowly on the exposed sections.
- Bring a map or a downloaded map on your phone, plus a fully charged phone.
Packing list
- Sturdy hiking boots with good grip
- Windproof and waterproof jacket
- Warm mid-layer in wool or fleece, hat and gloves
- Plenty of water and a packed lunch. There are few water sources on the ridge.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Trekking poles for the descent (optional)
