How long does the ski touring season last in Sunnmøre?
The ski touring season often begins as early as October, but the winter snow doesn’t always hold through the warmer months. It’s not unusual for us to take the final ski tours as late as July, especially since the mountain passes from Geiranger to Strynefjell and Trollstigen open late in spring. There can still be snow far into summer. Some of our guides have actually done ski tours every single month of the year!
The real spring season kicks off in April. After a long winter, the snowpack has built up to a solid base, giving way to fantastic skiing. Early in the season you might have been picking your way around bare rock, but now the turns are smoother, the snow is softer—or if you’re lucky, you’ll still find dry powder on north-facing slopes.
Did you know we sometimes call excellent spring snow conditions “World Champion Snow”? If the direction of the slope, timing, and weather all align, anyone can feel like a champion on skis!
